Many organizations treat Clean Core as a technical constraint during implementation, but this approach quickly breaks down after go-live. As business demands evolve, systems naturally drift back toward complexity unless strong governance is maintained.
A true Clean Core approach is built on three principles. First, the ERP core must remain stable and upgrade-safe, meaning customizations are minimized and controlled. Second, extensions must be pushed to well-defined layers using APIs and integration frameworks rather than direct modifications. Third, continuous governance is required to ensure that every new requirement is evaluated for long-term impact, not just immediate delivery.
The real challenge is not design — it is discipline over time. Without it, even the best-architected SAP landscapes slowly accumulate technical debt.
